MAIJA LUUTONEN
Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey
14.5 - 12.6 2016
Opening Saturday, May 14, 7–10 pm

Maija Luutonen (b. 1978) is a visual artist based in Helsinki, who primarily works with painting on paper. Often examining the attributes and expanding the limits of the medium, her work simultaneously deals with two-dimensionality and spatiality, as well as the very notion of representation. This exploration extends to the surface of the paper, sometimes handled as a relief in which her markings bring forth shapes from the reverse side.

Considering the surface as something transient, Luutonen addresses the relation between time and movement; treating the works as moving images – only that they shift too slow for the human eye or lifetime. Her practice often narrates around spatial immersion, our relation to built environment, nature and all its scales. In more recent work she focuses on the oscillation between anxiety and ecstasy in times of constant input, on encrypted subjects, strange weather and a potential apocalypse. The paper itself as a subject is also essential for her work, entering the space as a background and secret scroll. Reflecting on spatiality through an otherwise flat surface, the artist deals with notions of seemingly enclosed spaces, or rooms; where we live, where we look out, where the material and digital more and more seem to merge, where art is presented. The surface becomes a container of narratives and thoughts; the room a stage for both withdrawal and emergence.

Maija Luutonen received her MFA from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in 2006. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions internationally, but Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey is her first solo exhibition outside of Finland. Aside from several presentations at for example Kunsthalle Helsinki and SIC, previous exhibitions include, among others, Society Acts, kim? Contemporary Art Centre, Riga (2015), and Moderna Museet Malmö (2014); 24 Spaces – A Cacophony, Malmö Konsthall (2013); Dimensions of Sharing, Overgaden Institute for Contemporary Art, Copenhagen (2012); and Night On Earth, Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai (2008).
